PII and Amazon’s New Selling Partner API Explained

Need PII data fast? Get instant SP-API approval

Developers have been using Amazon Marketplace Web Service (MWS) to connect external software and applications since 2002. Amazon previously made policy changes to protect Personal Identifiable Information (PII) in 2019 when they stopped sharing PII data on Fulfilment By Amazon (FBA) orders. Amazon has recently announced new protections for customers’ PII that will require all sellers to migrate from MWS to the Selling Partner API (SP-API).

What Is PII?

Amazon defines PII as “any information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify contact, locate an individual (e.g., Customer), or identify an individual in context. This includes, but is not limited to, a Customer name, address, e-mail address, phone number, gift message content, purchases, and latitude/longitude of buyer addresses”.

Based on their new protections Amazon will not provide data to sellers that may compromise PII. This data includes:

  • Buyer’s name
  • Buyer’s phone number
  • Buyer’s mailing address
  • Buyer’s e-mail
  • Personalized gift messages

What Is Amazon Selling Partner API?

Amazon SP-API is a REST-based API that helps sellers programmatically access data on orders, shipments, payments, and more. The new API offers maximum protection for customers’ PII. SP-API programs must undergo a strict approval and audit process by both Amazon and a third-party agency.

Benefits of SP-API include:

  • Enhancing selling efficiency
  • Reducing labor requirements
  • Improving response times to customers
  • Creating more opportunities for selling partner growth

What Does This Mean for Amazon Sellers?

You must switch to approved Amazon SP-API to maintain access to the information needed to keep your Amazon store running. Data that will become unavailable to MWS users include:

  • Products API
  • Feeds API
  • Finances API
  • Fulfillment Inventory API
  • Fulfillment Inbound Shipment API
  • Fulfillment Outbound Shipment API
  • Recommendations
  • Subscriptions API
  • Push Notifications Schema
  • Orders API
  • Reports API
  • Merchant Fulfillment (MFN)

How Do Sellers Move to SP-API?

SalesWarp has completed the compliance and certification reviews with Amazon and their 3rd party auditors to support PII data for FBM (fulfilled by merchant) shipping and offers related services to medium to large enterprises needing to protect PII data.

We have also introduced a new solution for sellers/developers struggling to get SP-API approval on their own systems via our Cloudqix offerings. This new solution also works well with hybrid MWS API applications or SP-API applications that need access to the PII data for purposes of shipping orders or providing customer service.

With SalesWarp, PII data is protected in a secure and flexible way to comply with the
Amazon Data Protection Policy (DPP) and Acceptable Use Policies (AUP).

Amazon SP API Migration

Internal PII Management

Sellers applying for their own SP-API approval through
Amazon face a costly and time-consuming process and
run the risk of internal data leaks or PII violation.

Amazon SP API Integration

Other Large Vendors

Aside from their large price tags, vendors may also have a multitude of employees with access to PII data, increasing
the risk of data compromises.

SalesWarp provides the ability to continue FBM shipments securely with approved Amazon marketplace apps to handle shipping, customer service, returns and more.

We provide flexible options for Amazon Sellers, ideal for both SMB and Enterprise clients.
